Knee Pain When Bended, This Is the Cause and How to Treat It

Knee has an important role in supporting all your daily activities, from standing, walking, to running. But the knee hurts when bent can cause disruption of your daily activities. One of them is bursitis, which is inflammation of the bursa which is a pouch filled with joint lubricating fluid. This condition can appear suddenly and disrupt your activities.

Various Causes of Knee Pain when Bended?

In addition to bursitis, a sore knee when bent can also be caused by several other conditions, such as:

1. Injury

Having an injury to the knee can also be a cause of knee pain when bent. This is because when injured in the knee, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons can experience tension and damage. If one of these knee parts is torn or too tense, then that's when you may experience a knee pain when bent.

2. Meniscus tears

The meniscus is a layer of cartilage that serves to protect and stabilize the knee joints. When you move the knee joint, this layer is what makes the femur and shin not rub against each other. But when the meniscus is torn, its function can be disrupted and can cause direct friction between bones. This can cause pain when the knee is bent. Meniscus tears can occur when you make movements that force knee rotation when your feet are firmly grounded, such as sudden circular movements while playing futsal, basketball, or tennis.

3. Patellofemoral pain syndrome (pain in the kneecap)

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a condition when you feel pain in the knee bones (patella). Usually the pain that appears feels around the knee or the back of the knee. This condition is often caused by a variety of things, including using the knee too much. The pain will be more felt if your knees get pressure for a long time, for example when going up and down stairs, running, standing, or sitting too long.

4. Calcification of joints (osteoarthritis)

Osteoarthritis can also be another cause of knee pain when bent. Inflammation in the joints will cause thinning of the pads in the joints, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Besides occurring in the knee area, osteoarthiris can also appear in other joints, such as the hands, hips, and spine. Someone's risk of developing osteoarthritis will be even greater if they are elderly, overweight, and have suffered an injury to the knee joint.

How to Overcome Knee Pain when Bended?

In general, the treatment of a sore knee when bent should be adjusted to the underlying cause. But the following things you can try as initial treatment:

1. Rest your knees

Stop all activities that can make your knee more painful when bent. In addition, also avoid activities that increase the burden on the knee, for example lifting heavy objects.

2. Cold water compress

Compressing the knee with cold water can also relieve pain in the knee. Compress the aching knee area for 15-20 minutes and repeat every few hours.

3. Apply a little pressure

To prevent swelling, you can apply a little pressure by wrapping an elastic bandage on the knee that hurts. However, do not wrap the bandage too tight because it can cause obstruction of blood flow to the knee, which can worsen your condition.

4. Elevate the sore knee

Lifting a painful knee can be done to relieve the swelling in that section. This technique can be done by lying down and positioning your knees on a pillow so that they are taller than your chest.

5. Consumption of pain medications

In addition to the above methods, you can also take pain medications, such as paracetamol. You need to know some of the causes of knee pain when bent and the initial treatment as described above.
